Each year the teachers attend classes and workshops taught by internationally-recognized specialists. They learn new dances along with techniques for sharing their knowledge.
We usually dance to recorded music. We dance mostly village dances and some dances choreographed in folk style to the complex and fascinating rhythms and music of Eastern Europe, such as Hungary, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Greece, and others. We round out the repertoire with a few dances from other parts of Europe and the world, such as Israel, France, Russia, England, Mexico and South America, China, Japan and the United States.
We have a "core" repertoire which you will pick up as you attend a succession of Sunday nights, but we're also always acquiring fun and interesting new dances from a number of sources. Some of the dances are lyrical and slow, others are great aerobic exercise and give you a chance to really move. Most of the dances move in the traditional lines or circles; the repertoire also includes some couple dances (but you don't need to bring a partner).
Membership: We do not have membership dues or formal membership.
Support: A voluntary $3.00 donation is requested to cover the rental of the hall.
Food: Participants can bring a snack to share during the dancing.
Folk Dances: We work with a variety of beginner, intermediate and advanced dances: most are line or circle; steps are usually taught or reviewed; and many are easy to follow. Requests are encouraged. Participation in each dance is voluntary.
Dress:We dress casually and comfortably for dancing.
Age: All ages are welcome! We range from 5 to 85.
Level of Dance: We all dance together, beginners and advanced. Our goal is group participation and having fun!
Visitors: Visitors are always welcome. If you are from out of town and looking to do some international folk dancing, just show up.
There is no time like the present to start having fun folk dancing.
